Tom Cruise Has Last Laugh, Is New Head of UA

Tom CruiseJust hours after I posted that Sumner Redstone was trashing Tom Cruise’s reputation to disguise a plain old cost-cutting maneuver at Paramount, it turns out that Redstone had more than one reason to try to discredit Cruise: because he’s going to be a competitor.

Paula Wagner, Cruise’s production partner,  is the new CEO of United Artists; and both Wagner and Cruise will have part-ownership stakes in the studio. UA is scheduled to produce four films a year, and he will still have the opportunity to work with other studios.

Tom CruiseHmm…sounds like a pretty sweet deal for both Cruise and Wagner, and Redstone is left looking like a very bitter, poor loser. Deals this big don’t happen overnight, and there’s no doubt that Redstone got a whiff of it some time ago. So this whole charade he has been playing since August has just been a pathetic attempt to save face when his major star jumped ship.

Sorry Sumner, we see through your game…

Tom Cruise Was a Victim of His Own Success

Tom CruiseSumner Redstone, chairman of Viacom which owns Paramount Pictures, is heaping more scorn on Tom Cruise. But it’s all a smokescreen. Buried in the sensational headlines is real reason he ended the contract with the movie mega-star: Tom Cruise was just making too much money.

All the tabloids, blogs and papers are touting the outrageous headlines that “All Women Hate Tom Cruise!” That’s a bunch of malarkey. If “all women” hated Tom Cruise no one would have gone to see Mission Impossible III. Every move that he and Katie Holmes made wouldn’t be scrutinized by the press. No one would care. The fact that he still makes international news, the fact that anyone even cares what Redstone has to say about Cruise just goes to show that he retains much of his appeal.

Granted some of the bloom is off the rose because of his antics. But movie-goers have short memories, and Redstone knows it. So why fire Cruise? Here’s a hint from Redstone’s own mouth:

“The explosion of publicly ending his contract was good. It sent a message to the rest of the world that the time of the big star getting all this money is over. And it is! I would like to think that what I did, or what we did, has had a salutary effect on the rest of the industry.”

Tom CruiseThat’s right, folks. It’s all about the money. Redstone thinks that the stars of the films are getting more than their fair share of the profits: he wanted to keep more of the profits for his studio, Paramount Pictures. So he made a big stink about Tom Cruise for one reason and one reason only: to have an excuse to end the contract which paid Tom Cruise a whole lot of money.

I hope that Cruise’s fellow actors are paying attention to Redstone’s conduct and think twice about ever working for Paramount. What Redstone did was trash Cruise’s reputation rather than be honest about what was, in fact, a straight up decision by the studio that it wanted a bigger piece of the pie. Which big star is going to be next on the hit list?

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Finally Set a Wedding Date

Katie HolmesAfter months of speculation, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have finally set a wedding date. According to Arnold Robinson, their representative, they will marry in Italy on November 18th.

Tom CruiseGiorgio Armani will be handling the wardrobe arrangements, so I’m sure the photos which eventually be published (probably in People or Us Weekly depending on who wins the inevitable bidding war) will be stunning.

Previous rumors had them marrying at George Clooney’s villa which also just happens to be in Italy. Could it be that, as is often the case, the rumors were accurate but premature?

Redstone Plays Dirty Pool Ending Tom Cruise Contract

Tom Cruise Sumner Redstone, chairman of Paramount, went on the record today claiming that Paramount was ending its contract with Tom Cruise as a result of his recent behavior. I’m calling B.S. on Redstone and Paramount: he was bitter about the prospect of losing his moneymaker and was playing dirty pool by trying to tarnish Cruise’s public image.

The truth is that Tom Cruise and his business partner, Paula Wagner, were setting up a private financing group that will allow Cruise to make movies without Paramount - most likely at far more favorable financial terms than Paramount was offering him under his current contract. So he was getting ready to leave Paramount anyway…

So how does Redstone react? Like a child throwing a temper tantrum by trying to tarnish Cruise’s image so that he would be so untouchable that the only way Cruise could make further films is to come crawling back to Paramount (under far less favorable terms to be sure)…That’s just nasty below-the-belt business…

The truth is that Tom Cruise is a bona fide box office draw, and there’s no way that a studio would let him go no matter how bizarre his antics. To put it plainly, Sumner Redstone is a liar and even his subordinates are trying to distance themselves from his remarks…Shame on Redstone and shame on Paramount for not disowning his comments..

Suri Cruise Spotted, By Accident

Tom Cruise Despite rumors to the contrary, Suri Cruise isn’t a figment of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ imagination.

Tom and Katie took baby Suri to a birthday party for Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s son Jaden at an L.A. roller rink where one person said, “Suri is a beautiful baby with no deformities that I could see. She has gorgeous dark, curly hair and looks like Tom.”

On the way home, Cruise and Holmes came across a couple who had just been involved in a car accident and stayed with them until emergency services arrived. Many articles have proclaimed Tom a ‘hero,’ but that would be overstating the case: he and Katie did something kind, but it wasn’t exactly hero stuff.

Katie HolmesI’m of the mind that this whole demonization of Tom Cruise and his relationship has been a lot of piling on by very petty people. Has he been over the top in some of his public demonstrations? Of course. But the reality is that there are a whole lot of women who would give their right arm to have their significant other (let alone Tom Cruise) be so open about how in love with their wife they are. Many would give a few fingers just to hear it privately, so cut him some slack there…

As far as “hiding” Suri, I can’t blame them. A baby is a baby is a baby, no matter whether it’s the child of a celebrity or not. I can understand the public clamor to see Suri, but I can also understand the desire of her parents not to parade her around as if she were some sort of accessory akin to Paris Hilton’s chihuahua.

I don’t agree with Tom Cruise on many of his “religious” stands, but things like this show that he’s not a bad guy at heart. I say give him and Katie a break and let them enjoy being new parents for a little while…
